Closing date: Jan 16, 2026
Selkirk School District #70. Home of the Rangers. Serving the communities of Ione, Metaline, and Metaline Falls, Washington.
About the Communities We Serve
The Selkirk School District is proud to serve the neighboring towns of Metaline Falls, Ione and Metaline, located in the far northeastern corner of Washington’s Pend Oreille County, just south of the Canadian border. These communities are surrounded by the Colville National Forest and the scenic Pend Oreille River, offering residents and visitors a stunning backdrop of mountains, forests, and waterways.
All three towns have deep historical roots. Once thriving centers for mining and logging, they have transitioned into quieter, close-knit rural communities that value tradition, independence, and neighborly support. While the decline of natural resource industries has changed the local economy, the spirit of resilience and pride in community remains strong.
Community Life & Culture
Metaline Falls and Ione are known for their warm, small-town feel where neighbors support one another and families take pride in their communities.
The area leans conservative and family-oriented, with a strong sense of faith and tradition.
Residents describe the lifestyle as peaceful, centered around solitude, natural beauty, and genuine community connections.
Arts, Festivals, and Recreation
Despite their size, these towns boast a surprisingly vibrant cultural and recreational life:
Arts & Culture: Metaline Falls is home to the historic Cutter Theatre and community events such as Affair on 4th Ave. (Labor Day arts festival) and Deck the Falls Winter Festival.
Signature Festivals: Local favorites include the Bigfoot Festival, Fall Fiber Festival, and Ione’s Downriver Days, all of which bring the community together and attract visitors from across the region.
Outdoor Paradise: With easy access to hiking trails, waterfalls, Rail Riders pedal- powered excursions, big game hunting, and endless opportunities on the Pend Oreille River, the area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
Why Here?
Serving as superintendent in Selkirk means leading in a district where community and school are inseparable. Families, staff, and community members work together to support students, and the strong tradition of resilience provides a foundation for innovation and growth. For those who value natural beauty, a slower pace of life, and the chance to make a meaningful difference in a close-knit district, Metaline Falls and Ione offer a truly unique opportunity.
