Our Community…
Hoquiam whose name comes from the Native American word meaning “hungry for wood” due to the large quantity of driftwood at the mouth of the Hoquiam River is a beautiful, small town situated where the Hoquiam River empties into North Bay, connected to the Chehalis river on the west coast of Washington state. The Pacific Ocean is only 12 miles away and offers many amenities and activities as well as access to ocean fishing and shellfish harvesting.
Hoquiam’s rich history is showcased by the 7th Street Theatre, a historic atmospheric theater palace built in 1928 and designed to simulate an open-air playhouse with a painted “sky” ceiling complete with clouds and twinkling stars, the Robert Lytle Mansion, built in 1897 and known to locals as “The Castle” and the Poulson Museum which offers a glimpse into the booming logging industry on which the town was founded.
Hoquiam is a designated Tree City because of the expanse of virgin forest around it with many neighboring national forests. Hoquiam became a lumber capital with a booming industry in its early days, manufacturing wood products and machine tools. Fishing is also a highly important industry and hobby with the proximity to the ocean and many rivers.
Hoquiam celebrates its logging heritage each year on the second Saturday in September at the Logger’s Playday. Other popular community events in town include the Shorebird Festival, Hoquiam’s River Fest Rubber Duck Race, and many arts and crafts weekends during the warmer months. Popular attractions in town include a national wildlife refuge, a farmer’s market that is open all year, several museums, and a lively downtown shopping.
