The Jordan Valley Community

Jordan Valley is known for its sweeping high desert landscapes, deep ranching roots, and strong sense of rural identity. Founded in the late 1800s by Basque and Irish settlers, the town developed as an agricultural and cattle-ranching center along historic transportation routes connecting Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada.

Today, Jordan Valley remains one of Oregon’s most remote communities, with a population of just a few hundred residents surrounded by sagebrush plains, canyon country, and wide- open rangeland.

Despite its small size, Jordan Valley maintains a vibrant cultural heritage and serves as a regional hub for ranching families throughout southern Malheur County. The community is perhaps best known for its annual Big Loop Rodeo and traditional Basque influences, reflected in local cuisine and community traditions.

Residents value the town’s quiet pace of life, strong community ties, and access to outdoor recreation, including nearby Owyhee Canyonlands and Leslie Gulch. While the area faces challenges common to many rural communities – including geographic isolation and limited economic growth – Jordan Valley continues to preserve the traditions and resilience that have defined the region for generations.

The Jordan Valley School District

Nestled in the remote ranching community of Jordan Valley in southeastern Oregon, the Jordan Valley School District #3 serves one of the state’s smallest and most isolated student populations. The district operates three schools – Jordan Valley Elementary School, Jordan Valley High School, and Rockville Elementary – and enrolls fewer than 70 students across grades K-12. With small class sizes and a student-to-teacher ratio well below the state average, the district has built a reputation for providing individualized attention in a close-knit rural setting.

The district plays a central role in community life, serving families spread across vast stretches of Malheur County near the Idaho border. School activities, athletics, and community events often bring together residents of the tiny town of Jordan Valley. Despite the challenges common to remote rural districts – district leaders and educators continue working to preserve local schools and maintain educational opportunities for students living in one of Oregon’s most rural regions.
